Biography

Historian of Photography, as well as photographer in his own right, collector, publisher and late-night author – under a different name – of plays that have been published abroad but not in Italian, Paolo Morello has studied at the Scuola Normale in Pisa and St John’s College Oxford. He has taught History of Photography at various universities including Palermo, Bologna, Milano Cattolica, Brescia, Verona and Ca’ Foscari in Venice.

Since 2001 he has been teaching the same subject at the IUAV University in Venice. At the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Milan, he founded and directed the two-year Master’s course in Photography, the first of its kind anywhere in Europe. He is the director of the Istituto Superiore per la Storia della Fotografia, and contributing editor of the magazine “History of Photography”. For the last ten years he has worked on the foundation of the museum which is destined to house his collection of masterpieces from Italian twentieth-century photography.

He is currently writing A History of Photography 1839-2000 for the Einaudi publishing company, as well as A History of Photography in Italy.
